‘Tea & Honey’ by Overhand Sam

Exclusive stream of ‘Tea & Honey’ by a charming garage pop psychedelia of 21st century, Overhand Sam.

Known for the upside down guitar playing in Maybird (30th Century Records), Overhand Sam has been releasing music the lo- fidelity fanatics across the internet since 2015. Kink’s retro-pop meets Gainsbourg jazz-ish meets Vonnegut inspired Fuzzy-Space-Krautrock.

For me, ‘Tea & Honey’ is a song about recognizing your weaknesses and the drive to pick yourself up. I found myself using the song as a mantra so I could be my own cheerleader. I’d written it a few years ago and only a lowly acoustic demo lived on a cassette which I kept turning up. Eventually I got the band together, and we gave it a shot. It came together really quickly, and it hit all the marks I had hoped. In the classic film, Godzilla vs The Smog Monster (1971), there are these scenes that take place in a Japanese night club, with cool psych rock (written by Riichiro Manabe) happening and go-go dancers & visuals and whatnot. I always wanted a song that felt like it could be played at a Japanese night club in the 70’s because of those scenes, and I think this is my best attempt at that.” Sam
