‘The Restless Kind’ by New Math | New Career-Spanning Compilation ‘Die Trying & Other Hot Sounds (1979-1983)’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘The Restless Kind’ by New Math, taken from the upcoming career-spanning compilation ‘Die Trying & Other Hot Sounds (1979-1983),’ out July 21st via Propeller Sound Recordings.
“‘The Restless Kind’ is one of my favorite New Math tunes to play and a show opener. The lyrics about youthful excess, thrills and movin’ on are perfectly reflected by the rocket fast 270 bpm tempo of the song and the feeling that the band is about to careen off a cliff at any moment.” – Gary Trainer
Formed in Rochester, NY in ‘76, New Math opened for the likes of Ramones, The Cramps, The Damned, The Psychedelic Furs, Pretenders, and Gun Club. Offering up an endless supply of ascending guitar lines & catchy hooks of amphetamine-fueled power pop. With a 7″ on CBS in the UK and an EP on 415 Records label, the band rode the new wave.
This new release is a collection of unreleased demos and long out-of-print singles including their debut, ‘Die Trying’. Their first single was produced by Howard Thompson who was known for working with John Cale and the Psychedelic Furs. It was first released on Reliable Records in 1979 and then re-released on CBS in the UK with the same B-side ‘Angela’. ‘Die Trying’ did receive some airplay on John Peel’s radio show and landed somewhere near the bottom of the British Charts back in 1980. In 1984, the band became the Jet Black Berries & signed to Enigma Records.
Following a trip to The Hit Factory in NYC to record the unreleased singles ‘Diana’ and ‘Take to the Night,’ the band called it quits. However not too long after, the band reformed with the same lineup and became Jet Black Berries. After Jet Black Berries disbanded in the late 1980s, Trainer, Yockel, and Stein eventually formed the Atomic Swindlers years later, who became one of David Bowie’s favorite bands.
Today, the members of New Math will more likely identify themselves as former members of Jet Black Berries whereas New Math will be viewed as just a footnote or a band that had all the potential for major-label incarnation, but just couldn’t get a deal.
