‘Dark Roses’ by Donna Blue | “A lonesome stranger carrying a flowery dream, forever pining after his golden mirage”
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Dark Roses’ by vintage pop band Donna Blue.
‘Dark Roses’ tells the traditional story of a lifelong search for lost love. It’s the first new music the duo has released since their third EP ‘Inbetween’ in 2020. In the past year they have been writing and recording new music, and playing shows around Europe whenever possible. ‘Dark Roses’ is accompanied by a video, portraying a timeless story in timeless black and white. Donna Blue also announce their first headline tour through the Netherlands, 8 shows for which tickets are on sale now.
Moving from a dream state to lush sensory excitement, the duo behind Donna Blue invites you into a grainy, cinematic realm. Their music reminds one of the likes of Nancy & Lee, Serge Gainsbourg and Julee Cruise – whilst also drawing inspiration from film composers such as Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni and John Barry. Originally hailing from The Netherlands, the group
has an international outlook, touring with their band throughout Europe (gaining support from platforms such as TV channel ARTE and Clash Music, who called their songwriting ‘irresistible’), and venturing out overseas for performances in the United States.
New single ‘Dark Roses’ is a somewhat dark and western inspired duet, which tells the story of a lifelong search for lost love, a topic often found in old folk songs. Following a Nancy & Lee-esque song structure, its lyrics symbolize the fruitless search for perfection. A lonesome stranger carrying a flowery dream, forever pining after his golden mirage.
The video for Dark Roses was shot on a mountain in Wallonia, visualizing a brooding stranger looking for a dream, a made up woman, a lost love. A timeless story in timeless black and white.
