‘Worm’ by Royal Canoe | New LP, ‘Vault (2011-2021)’
Today, Winnipeg-based indie-pop powerhouse collective Royal Canoe have announced and shared a brand new LP entitled ‘Vault (2011-2021)’, which consists of 10 unreleased B-sides and lost tracks from the past decade.
Today also marks the release of the record’s focus track, ‘Worm (ft. Dill the Giant)’, along with an accompanying animated stop-motion lyric video created by Mimi Stop Motion.
Speaking on the brand new collection, the band wrote:
“’Vault (2011-2021)’ is a collection of 10 songs that were pulled from a long list of unreleased demos, B-sides and oddities that have been accumulating on our various hard-drives over the past decade. These songs are the underdogs, the overachievers and the almost-fits that we just couldn’t quit. During this past winter we dusted off old backups, scoured mp3-vaults and even went back to the studio to finish up a few tracks that were uncompleted but long-time favourites of the band. For us, each song on ‘Vault’ feels like a brief journal entry that captures a simple, but meaningful moment from the past decade of us making sounds together.”
The band’s last LP, ‘Sidelining’, came out last year (via Paper Bag Records).
Royal Canoe is also heading out on a Canadian tour this spring, in support of both Sidelining and Vault (2011-2021). Tickets are on sale now.
Royal Canoe would never be characterized as having taken the simple, prescribed path over the past decade. This almost stubborn fascination with finding “the long way around” has resulted in a rich catalog of albums, EPs, videos and experimental live shows that are as adventurous in their process as they are in their creativity. Whether it’s releasing radio-singles in 5/4 time, performing concerts on instruments made of ice, adamantly dragging their multiple-drum-set, six-keyboard live-setup around the world in their van and trailer, or their various outrageous schemes to stay connected to their fans, Royal Canoe have stuck around because they’ve never lost sight of what drives them – the exhilaration that comes with the opportunity to do something completely new.
This time, “something completely new” counter-intuitively meant revisiting their past. ‘Vault (2011-2021)’ is a collection of ten songs that were pulled from a long list of unreleased demos, b-sides and oddities that have been accumulating on various hard-drives over the past decade.
