‘I Dreamed I Heard a Song Called Habibi’ by Your 33 Black Angels

Exclusive video premiere of ‘I Dreamed I Heard a Song Called Habibi’ by Your 33 Black Angels.

Your 33 Black Angels is a long-running freakshow based out of New York City, formed in 2003…The genre-defying project has its own stamp of dark pop, electro-paisley new wave space rock, with a dose of crunk bass and rhythm. No one really knows how to describe Y33BA’s sonic attack. Part XTC, part New Order, part VU; like Galaxie 500 being beaten up by Kraftwerk and the Wu-Tang Clan.

The 9-minute epic video ‘I Dreamed I Heard a Song Called Habibi’ is the latest animated dream-vision from Benji Kast, a longtime video collaborator and occasional mouth-harper. Set to the equally epic Y33BA song, this short movie is part Adam Curtis, part Philip K. Dick, but mostly an original vision of dystopia and evolution in a time of human crisis.

Benji Kast is a NYC based film and video artist. Aside from collaborations with Y33BA on music video and film projects, he has also made several short experimental films, with premieres at Slamdance Anarchy, Rooftop films, Millennium, KGB and Anthology Film Archives. His work has been described as a cross between Ken Russell, Adam Curtis and Gothic painting. As a non-fiction editor, he has been nominated for several awards.

On other fronts, the group is returning to Brazil after a successful, pre-pandemic run in 2019. Audiences in the land of Gal and Gil have demanded more of the cold-weather sounds of New York City’s venerable princes of epic future-pop.

Y33BA released ‘Eternities I’ in 2019. Both the group’s strangest and catchiest record to date, ‘Eternities I’ mixes soundscape, dream pop, breaks, field recordings and the usual luminous vocal harmonies…a Y33BA magnum opus for the 21st century.

Y33BA, formed in 2003, released its debut ‘Lonely Street’ in 2007, on vinyl-only limited-edition. The combo has toured Europe and North America for over 500 shows. The records got weirder, but stayed tuneful: ‘Tales of my Pop-Rock Love Life’ (2008), ‘Pagan Princess’ (2009), ‘Songs from the Near Bleak Future’ (Optical Sounds, 2010) ‘Moon and Morning Star’ (Optical Sounds, 2012), ‘Glamour’ (2015) and ‘Eternities I’ (2019).

Y33BA has shared the stage with fine acts in recent tours, from Europe to Canada to Brazil. Phenoms such as La Femme, Dyr Faser, Negro Leo, New Aura and The Veldt have shared multiple nights with the group.
