‘Black Jack Grin’ by That Summer featuring Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers | New EP, ‘A Place Called Home’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Black Jack Grin’ by That Summer featuring Steve Ferrone of Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, taken from the upcoming EP, ‘A Place Called Home,’ out March 17th via Ring Records.
That Summer mixes elements of singer/songwriter and pop/rock musings with alternative and punk rock ethos. The band is fronted by songwriter/producer Charles Rocha, who presents an autobiographical collection of songs about loss, time, travel, and struggles with addiction and alcoholism. The band hopes to reach anyone who feels misunderstood, or like they just don’t fit in.
Charles Rocha of That Summer says: “Imagine moving across the country leaving everything and everyone you know behind, with nothing but a guitar and that guitar is all that you own. I finally made it to Los Angeles and I’m standing in an empty apartment with my guitar, “Black Jack Grin” poured out of me. With nothing, I felt like I had the winning hand and all that I needed. Soon after, there was a piano in the living room where I wrote the song. I started showing some friends and along the way, Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) heard the song and wanted to play drums on it. Greg Hetson opened the doors to his studio and let us record the music. Something was missing, so I played the song for Matt Pinfield and he handed me the missing link, lyrics that tied the entire song together. Listening back to the finished song, my life began to fill out with quality friends and more musical instruments. I knew I had everything, even when I had nothing.”
Rocha began touring at the age of 17 with some of his favorite bands including Bad Religion, NOFX, Lagwagon and Craig’s Brother. Born in Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, Charles Rocha has lived and created music all over the world. After a brief spell in Nashville, Rocha moved to Florida to finish his Bachelor’s degree in English. At this time Rocha began recording his own songs from his bedroom. This evolved into That Summer. ‘The Hearth EP Vol. 1’ was finished with Roger Lima (Less Than Jake, Rehasher) at The Moathouse Recording Studio in Gainesville, Florida in 2013.
Most recently, That Summer celebrated major radio airplay, when Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Eric Clapton, George Harrison) added their lush, lap-steel laden cover of ‘Wildflowers’ to his playlist on Tom Petty Radio and Matt Pinfield featured That Summer on KLOS 95.5FM Los Angeles. Rocha is currently working with Ian Cross (Dishwalla, Janet Jackson), Ryan Greene (Fat Wreck Chords) and Thom Flowers (Bad Astronaut, The Ataris, Steve Perry) on a debut full length LP, to be released on Ring Records.
