‘New Fossils’ by New Fossils | Album Premiere
Exclusive album premiere ‘New Fossils’ by newcomer to the vibrant jazz scene of Budapest New Fossils, out April 14th, 2023 via Morotva Records.
New Fossils are led by drummer Dániel Ferenc Szabó and bassist Marcell Gyányi, some of the most in demand players of their generation in Budapest before performing their own compositions. After sharpening their teeth through a wide array of collaborations in the pop world, they wanted to dig deep into the world of improvised music. Forming a group with local jazz heavyweights Dániel Varga on saxophone and István Tóth on guitar, but in need of vibey piano and synth sounds, they invited Damján Ocsovay to join the band.
Together, they form a contemporary jazz quintet, creating a dark, cinematic sound melded with youthful vigour and head nodding rhythms.
“Dani (drums) and Marci (bass) started their own quartet basically at the same time with the same people in 2021. We eventually joined forces, so the songs came quite fast because everyone was really inspired. It was recorded at Supersize Studio which is one of the oldest recording studios in Hungary. We slept together, we ate together and we recorded a bunch of songs. Even if we are perfectionists, we have been so productive that we are going to release another LP this fall with more jazzier tracks.”
