‘I Would Like To Pet It’ by JD Pinkus | New Album, ‘Grow A Pear’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘I Would Like To Pet It’ by JD Pinkus, taken from the upcoming album, ‘Grow A Pear,’ set to release June 7, 2024 via Shimmy-Disc.
JD Pinkus, known for his trailblazing work with the Butthole Surfers and The Melvins, has unveiled his latest single, ‘I Would Like To Pet It.’ This psychedelic bluegrass-infused track is a quirky yet compelling preview from his forthcoming album, Grow A Pear, due out on June 7th via Shimmy-Disc. With its vibrant banjo riffs, twangy energy, and whimsical lyrics, the song encapsulates the boundary-pushing creativity that fans have come to expect from Pinkus.
The song’s accompanying music video, crafted by Richard Mather, best known for his work on Rick and Morty, offers an animated visual journey that perfectly complements the single’s offbeat spirit. Mather’s distinctive style breathes life into the playful narrative of someone who just can’t resist the urge to touch things they shouldn’t, with a blend of quirky animation and subtle humor.
Pinkus’s new album, ‘Grow A Pear,’ promises to be a fascinating extension of his musical exploration. Following his 2021 LP ‘Fungus Shui,’ this latest effort is a potent blend of punk, psychedelic rock, and folk with a bluegrass twist. In his own words, the album represents a culmination of years of work, stemming from contributions intended for a Butthole Surfers project that ultimately evolved into this solo record.
“‘Grow A Pear’ has been in the works for 5 years. What started as my contributions for the “new” Butthole Surfers’ album that was not to be turned into a solo album I recorded with contributions from some of my favorite flavor players to create an album that most represents where I came from and bridges to where I’m at right now,” Pinkus explained. He added, “My wishes for the future are that everyone in the world will finally ‘Grow A Pear’.”
The album promises a diverse array of sounds, with Pinkus describing it as a combination of “heavy psychedelia, drum and bass grooves, bouncy boogie, catchy tunes, and sprinkles of tasty horns, keys, and strings thrown in.” It’s this eclectic approach that has earned him a loyal following across multiple genres.
‘Grow A Pear’ is set for release on June 7th via Shimmy-Disc, and if ‘I Would Like To Pet It’ is any indication, listeners are in for a wild, genre-defying ride. Check out the music video for ‘I Would Like To Pet It’ and mark your calendars for the album’s release next month.
