‘Wave’ by Karma Glider | New EP, ‘Ocean Honey Violence’

Exclusive premiere of the video for “Wave” by Karma Glider, from the upcoming EP ‘Ocean Honey Violence,’ out June 21st, 2024 via Mothland.

Indie rock banger ‘Wave’ – found on Karma Glider’s Solstice-bound sophomore EP, ‘Ocean Honey Violence’ – is all about thrusting yourself into the unknown, whether hitting the road to the tune of a great mixtape, or simply embracing nature’s proverbial turbulent flow and harmoniously “crashing like a wave.” Much like the rest of the Montrealers’ new 6-song effort, the acutely lo-fi motorik track truly feels like it free-willed itself into existence, only to be channeled through various means of recording rock & roll… sometimes, less is more.

Susil Sharma from Karma Glider says, “‘Wave’ is about the unknown and letting it all happen with no regrets.”

Director of the premiering video, Evan Sharma, commented: “I had a ton of fun shooting this thing. I learned that making stuff can be easy and fun when you work with kind and creative peeps. Also, shout out to the Mothland family for allowing us to invade their office for the afternoon, they rule. Not only was working with Susil super chill and easy but believe me when I tell you, that shit was pure comedy. The dude’s a funny MF. The shooting process was pretty simple actually. We listened to the track a few times, bounced around some ideas, brought over some shitty VHS gear, shot a few takes, laughed our asses off and then ate some cheese burgers. Said “frig yeah!” to pink hues, said “frig yeah!” to Karma Glider. I dunno dude, check it out. The track is bitchin’.

‘Ocean Honey Violence’ from Karma Glider is all about embracing the creative process, trusting your instincts, not overthinking art, just letting it happen. The result is a sultry collection of elegantly swervy shoegaze and Britpop-informed melodic delights about longing and nostalgia, but also about hope and building friendships along your journey. From its tongue-in-cheek, AI-generated introduction on opener, ‘Back,’ all the way to the crude poetry whispered softly on its jungle beat-driven, neo-psychedelic closer, ‘Submarine,’ this new EP from Susil Sharma & co cleverly walks a fine line between heartfelt songwriting and nonchalant yet on-point production.

While debut release ‘Future Fiction’ (2023) paved the way for Karma Glider’s underdog brand of indie rock, this sophomore effort from the Montréal outfit digs deeper, introducing more sonic experiments, and further exploring electronica-tinged grooves to support its dripping layers of fuzzy guitars and layered synthesizers. Written and recorded – with help from co-producers Adrian Popovich and Joseph Donovan as well as musicians Jean-Philippe Godbout (drums, additional production) and Matthew Peri (backing vocals) – in the span of a few months, ‘Ocean Honey Violence’ is a bittersweet auditory daze that promises to strike a chord with fans of meddled rock music à la Primal Scream, the Jesus and Mary Chain or Spacemen 3.
