‘Blackbeard’ by Portraits of Pirates | New Album, ‘ Floating Gold’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Blackbeard’ by Portraits of Pirates, taken from their upcoming album, ‘Floating Gold,’ slated for release on November 9, 2024.
Portraits of Pirates is charting its own course through the deep waters of psych rock and ambient music with their debut album ‘Floating Gold,’ set to release on November 9, 2024. The project is the brainchild of Vince Cuneo, a Venice Beach guitarist known for his work with the psych rock duo Movie Club. What began as a personal practice of ambient music for meditation gradually evolved into something far more expansive as Vince started to share his music at cannabis yoga events.
A Pittsburgh native, Vince’s love for pirates and their lore connects with the heart of the album. The idea for Portraits of Pirates came to him during a trip to Disneyland, when he was struck by the pirate imagery surrounding the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The concept for ‘Floating Gold’ centers on the journey of a pirate searching for treasure, mirroring Vince’s own creative process. “It’s about trusting the initial process, keeping things simple—making a loop, listening, and feeling,” Vince explains. This is his first album fully written, produced, and recorded solo, and it reflects a deeply personal moment in his life.
The album’s ten tracks flow seamlessly like waves in the ocean, drawing listeners into a hypnotic, sonic landscape. To complement the music, Vince has created a series of visualizer videos for each song, adding an extra layer of atmosphere. One of the standout moments is the music video for ‘Blackbeard,’ shot on the iconic Venice Beach by videographer Bobby Rivero. The video brings the album’s pirate theme to life, capturing the essence of a Venice pirate’s search for gold, both in the material and artistic sense.
‘Floating Gold’ is a personal quest, with each track, video, and visual element acting as a treasure map leading to the heart of Vince Cuneo’s creative vision.
