‘Black Lungs’ by Captain Crocodile | New EP, ‘Moon Presence’
Exclusive track premiere of ‘My Black Lungs’ by Liverpool’s psych-rock up-and-comer Captain Crocodile.
Captain Crocodile is back, and his new single ‘Black Lungs’ (out November 29th) is a slow-burning trip through anxiety, monotony, and the bittersweet escape we sometimes seek in bad habits. This track is the first taste of his upcoming EP, ‘Moon Presence,’ set for release on January 17th.
The solo project of Jack Norrie, Captain Crocodile has made a name for himself with his raw, dreamy take on psychedelia. Now joined by a live band—Aaron Stafford (lead guitar), Emiliano Del Toro (drums), and Rohan Kapoor (bass)—Norrie’s sound has grown richer, more textured, and brimming with live energy.
‘Black Lungs’ opens with shimmering, warped guitars and a steady bass pulse, creating a hazy undercurrent for Norrie’s deep, introspective vocals. As the track unfolds, it builds into a dense, fuzzy crescendo, with crashing cymbals and distorted guitars swirling into a chaotic yet strangely cathartic ending. There’s a touch of King Krule’s melancholic grit and Crumb’s hypnotic ease, but the vibe is all Captain Crocodile—moody, atmospheric, and deeply personal.
The song dives headfirst into themes of self-doubt and coping. Norrie reflects on its inspiration:
“’Black Lungs’ is about the unhealthy loops we find ourselves stuck in. For me, it was smoking—something I picked up to deal with anxiety and stress. It’s a bad habit, but it felt like the only way to ground myself at the time. The whole EP circles around that idea of being trapped in your own patterns.”
Recorded and produced by Norrie himself, the track balances lo-fi charm with sharp production, blending post-punk grit, psych-rock haze, and indie melancholy into a sound that’s unmistakably his.
Captain Crocodile has been quietly making waves with previous releases, earning spots on coveted playlists and sharing stages with artists like Nightbus, La Sécurité, Stealing Sheep, and Drahla. With ‘Black Lungs’ and the promise of Moon Presence, he’s setting the stage for something bigger—so don’t sleep on this one.
