Saxophonist Sakina Abdou returns with her highly anticipated trio album ‘Hammer, Roll and Leaf,’ out today, November 29, 2024, via Relative Pitch Records.
This new release follows her debut solo effort, offering a raw and intimate exploration that feels as fresh as a first encounter. Recorded during an improvised, multi-day session at Abdou’s home and punctuated by two live performances, the album’s 60-minute arc traces a personal and acoustic musical journey that delves into the unknown.
Abdou is joined by percussionist Toma Gouband, known for his work with Evan Parker, and pianist Marta Warelis, who has collaborated with luminaries like Dave Douglas and Andy Moor. Abdou’s musical partnership with Gouband dates back to their time in Will Guthrie’s gamelan ensemble Nist-Nah, while her work with Warelis emerged from the wild energy of Amsterdam’s improvisational collective Doek.
With this archetypal trio, the album promises to push boundaries and uncover new territories, blending influences and genres in ways that feel both spontaneous and meticulously crafted. ‘Hammer, Roll and Leaf’ offers a dynamic space where possibilities are endless, inviting listeners to explore a vast, mysterious world of sound.
