‘The Unhounded Now’ by Dead Meadow | New Album, ‘Voyager To Voyager’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘The Unhounded Now’ by Dead Meadow, taken from the upcoming album, ‘Voyager To Voyager,’ slated for release on March 28th 2025 via Heavy Psych Sounds.
‘Voyager to Voyager’ marks Dead Meadow’s tenth studio album and a defining moment in their 26-year journey. This is the band’s most emotionally charged and sonically expansive album, crafted in the wake of bassist Steve Kille’s passing from cancer in early 2024. His death casts a poignant light on the record, though it’s not a tribute album—it’s a reflection of their legacy and a celebration of Kille’s creative spirit.
The album was recorded across three sessions at Ultrasound Studios in downtown LA, where the band maintained the raw, live energy of their earlier work, often capturing first or second takes. Drummer Mark Laughlin delivers some of his most inspired work here, but the recording process was clouded by Kille’s declining health. In the final stages, he was present only in spirit, his creative influence felt even as he could no longer play. Simon took on the mixing himself after initial attempts didn’t capture the sound the band envisioned. The final product, mixed in Simon’s own studio, feels like classic Dead Meadow—immediate, expansive, and full of cosmic atmosphere.
The music delves into familiar themes of space, isolation, and human connection. The opening track, ‘The Space Between,’ uses the theory of the universe’s continual expansion as a metaphor for the strains in relationships, while the title track, ‘Voyager to Voyager,’ explores humanity’s farthest-reaching creations—the Voyager spacecraft—as a symbol of connection between distant travelers.
When asked about today’s premiering track, ‘The Unhounded Now,’ the band shared: “Musically, this song started with Mark Laughlin’s beat and came together quickly from the jam that beat inspired. For some reason we all thought the song reminded us of ‘The Magical Mystery Tour’. The lyrics took inspiration from that… So here’s an invitation to ‘The Unhounded Now,’ a rare place where nothing is beeping, buzzing, and harassing you, a place where nothing is calling your attention away from where you want it to stay, a place that is not always easy to find in this day and age.”
Oh, and did I mention I’m working on an interview with Jason Simon that will dive even deeper into all of this?
Though the album wasn’t specifically designed as a tribute, Kille’s presence is deeply felt throughout. His bass lines, which helped shape the band’s distinctive sound, are integral to the album’s success. ‘Voyager to Voyager’ stands as a testament to the band’s enduring bond, their creative depth, and Kille’s immeasurable contribution to Dead Meadow’s legacy. It’s a cosmic journey that marks both an end and a new beginning for the band.
