Shimmy-Disc is set to revive Bruce Haack’s 1975 album ‘This Old Man’ with a posthumous vinyl reissue arriving on March 14th (Shimmy-2029).

This marks the record’s first vinyl appearance since its original release on Haack’s Dimension 5 label—a long-overdue homecoming for a work that continues to challenge and inspire.

Following the recent reissue of ‘Captain Entropy’ (Shimmy-2019), ‘This Old Man’ reasserts Haack’s stature as one of electronic music’s boldest innovators. The Canadian composer, whose work from the 1950s to the 1970s remains rediscovered by a new generation, blended the innocence of childhood with futuristic soundscapes, creating a universe where technology and melody intertwined.

Central to this album is a device of Haack’s own making—a polyphonic music computer cobbled together from surplus parts supplied by Ver-Tech Radio of Philadelphia. Constructed in just 18 months without blueprints or formal training, the machine could handle up to twelve simultaneous voices, store over 4,000 bits of data, and even improvise. It’s a striking example of how Haack turned technical limitations into a canvas for sonic experimentation.

To celebrate the reissue, Shimmy-Disc has also released a video for the title track, reimagining an old English folk tune through Haack’s futuristic lens. The piece captures the playful spirit that defined his work, speaking directly to the inner child and the restless innovator in all of us.
