‘Called A Fool’ by Nona Invie | New Album, ‘Self-soothing’

Nona Invie drops ‘Called A Fool,’ the third single from their upcoming LP ‘Self-soothing,’ slated for release February 28, 2025 via Boiled Records.

An immersive listen, steeped in catharsis and sonic healing, ‘Self-soothing’ was born as a coping response to anxiety, self-doubt, and the ongoing horrors of the outside world.

“This is a very personal record. I felt very selfish making it. Self-indulgent. I had been feeling extremely insular, and had tamped my feelings down for a long time. Working on these songs was a coping mechanism in response to my anxiety, self-doubt, the ongoing horrors in the outside world. Everything can be falling apart all around me and the piano will ground me. This record touches on feelings of guilt and shame after a long-term relationship ended, on remembering friends who died too young, on toxic love in friendship and romance, on hopeful feelings of creating and living in a fantasy. These songs are a weighted blanket that comforted and supported me in a lonely time.

I wrote some of these songs years ago and had always intended to expand on them. Andrew Broder really helped me to understand what was possible with these. He unlocked their potential and helped me gain the confidence I needed to be willing to share them with the outside world. Cole Pulice (sax) and Cole Davie (bass) added so much texturally to these songs, and emotionally too. The process of collaborating on this record has been inspiring and truly life-changing.

I am an introvert, but I need to share. I haven’t always been willing to do that in the past, but I am excited to sort of reintroduce myself to people. I hope that these songs can be supportive, comforting to others.”

Nona Invie is a singer/composer based in Minneapolis that has worked with a range of musical projects, including singer-songwriter Angel Olsen, slowcore heroes Low, Folk Americana band Dark Dark Dark, electronic trio RONiiA, and the choral ensemble Anonymous Choir. Their solo work layers acoustic piano with synth instruments, submerging the listener in an ethereal landscape led by the incomparable beauty of Invie’s voice.
