Following up on their 2022 debut ‘The Human Jazz,’ Berlin’s TWÏNS return with ‘Healing Dreams,’ an album that marks their transition from grief to healing. A spiritual journey steeped in introspection, the album blends jazz, psychedelic rock, and sun-soaked ’70s influences into something wholly unique. The lead single, ‘Love, Third Variation,’ featuring Sarah Martin, is a soft, Carol King-inspired tune, weaving in delicate jazz and psychedelic flourishes. Recorded in Miro Denck’s bedroom studio, the album’s vintage warmth transports listeners far from Berlin’s urban pulse, embracing a vibrant, multi-cultural sound from spiritual jazz to Brazilian MPB.

“‘Love, Third Variation’ is a song I started writing sitting in this vast, sunny garden of an old countryside house on holiday in southern France. I only had this creaking Spanish guitar on me that I found in the house, and I started playing around with the verse. I started to get an idea on where I wanted this to go and was quite excited to work it out with all the arrangements, but it was still pretty much just a sketch. Back in Berlin I got together with Sarah of Meagre Martin and together we worked out the whole structure, musically and lyrically. We wanted to give it sort of a Carole King-inspired direction, but with this tippy, more jazzy B-part. Sarah sings on the track, with fellow Berlin based musician and regular collaborator Martha Rose playing flute and adding some backing vocals, and Ale Borea on congas. The rest is me. Thematically, the song deals with someone who never learned how to love without becoming possessive and emotionally suffocating the other person.
The coupled non-album B-side ‘Evening All Day’ is an older idea of mine that I recently reworked. It’s an instrumental inspired by some mid 70s spaced-out library grooves, but with some proggy influences. I kind of like this wailing guitar sound I got there, which I came across when I was actually looking for something between JJ Cale and Connan Mockasin. Still didn’t get there hah.”
‘Healing Dreams’ is a communal effort, enriched by contributions from Berlin’s eclectic artistic network.
