Kat King Shines with ‘I Might Like It’

Indie alt-pop outfit Kat King is nothing less than a bright star in the making. Upon first listen of their latest single ‘I Might Like It’ (released February 28th), your spirits are instantly lifted, drawn in by her voice and the rich textures enveloping the melodies.

The song features vibrant musical layers paired with anthemic, lush guitars, pop vocals, and a mystique that reminds us of a blend between Kate Bush and indie pop, with a touch of ’90s indie, like Veruca Salt—but with a 2025 twist! It’s hard not to fall in love, hum along, and nod your head to Kansas City’s soaring tune. Chappell Roan must have a second cousin (and maybe another Midwest princess in the making!).

‘I Might Like It’ truly acts as an uplifting lyrical vehicle to help listeners shake off past relationships that may have entangled them in the spell of love and its addiction cycles of pain. It’s easy to relate to the desire to stand up and free yourself—and with a song like ‘I Might Like It,’ you can be sure to listen and feel like sunlight at any time of day.

Kat King shared, “’I Might Like It’ started from a voice memo that Derek (our guitarist) sent me. I fell in love with the nostalgic progression and droney guitar line, so I started crafting the verse lyrics over it on a plane home after reconnecting with one of my closest friends. We’d spent an evening calling ourselves out for how we’d both functioned in past relationships, blurring the line between love and addiction to the pain of someone who strings you along. We’ve both found our way out of that cycle, thankfully, but I think many people have found themselves there. I wrote the chorus to be an anthem for that sentiment. At first listen, it might sound like another heartbreak song, but really I’m shaking my past self like, ‘Hey dummy, stop putting yourself through this cycle. The blame can’t all be put on the person stringing you along.’ I hope listeners pick up on that twist and that it incites them to reflect on this all-too-common notion.”

On stage, Kat King has been called infectious, and the group has opened for acts like The Beths and Jason Isbell. They’ve also been in regular rotation on numerous stations. Michelle Bacon from 90.9 The Bridge said, “With exhilarating live shows, a first-rate band, and polished pop gems, Kat King has become one of Kansas City’s most in-demand indie artists.”

I hear a number of sounds when listening to your single ‘I Might Like It.’ Who are your musical influences?

Honestly, I typically don’t know who’s influenced me until after I’ve written a song. I did finish ‘I Might Like It’ in the peak of my “Chappell Roan on repeat” phase, and her vocal stylings definitely influenced some of my choices. Writing more collaboratively also means that everyone’s musical influences are coming through more. Derek wrote the verse and bridge chord progressions, and you can totally hear Radiohead in the bridge, who I know has been influential on him. Our musical influences are constantly evolving, though. Currently, I can’t stop listening to Saya Gray and Biig Piig, so I’m sure they’ll be showing up in different ways in the next songs I write.

Is there a group message from Kat King, meaning, for your fans and supporters to know what your musical purpose is?

Big question! We play because we love writing music and we’re passionate about creating a space that feels inclusive, inspiring, and fun. I want our fans to know they can show up as they are, move how they want, and that they’re a part of the experience with us, whether that’s live or through our recordings. The collective synergy that can come from a group experience (especially through music for me) is one of the most powerful and memorable experiences, and I really strive to create that because the world needs more of it.

Any dream band you’d like to open up for?

How do you choose?! I’ve always been a diehard Paramore fan and think that crowd energy would be next level, but I don’t want to sound like a broken record. Tennis, HAIM, Big Thief, Local Natives, St. Vincent, and so many more are on my list. I’m sure everyone in the band would have a different answer though.

Heard you have a new album coming? Tell us more about that!

This is a big fingers-crossed statement, but I’m trying to will it into existence! A full album is something we would all love to accomplish together, especially having played together for four years now. We have so many songs in the bank and are still writing new ones, so an album also just makes sense. ‘I Might Like It’ is the first release in our batch, and we’ve got three more singles on the way. We just have to figure out how to secure the funds to record the rest, but I’m really optimistic that it’ll happen.

I read that you co-produced your last releases. Did you also co-produce “I Might Like It” and your upcoming album? Who was your other co-producer?

‘I Might Like It’ was produced by our friend Isaac Flynn of Hembree. It was our first time working with him and also the first time we all got to be in the studio together for production decisions, which was huge. Everyone was throwing in ideas and opinions, so it definitely felt like a team effort.
