Ultimate Painting – “Not Gonna Burn Myself Anymore” (2018) review
Ultimate Painting – Not Gonna Burn Myself Anymore (Bella Union, 2018)
This is a sonically infectious drifting neo-psychedelic blues laden single, one laced with understated hooks, sidewalk swagger, and serves as the skeleton-key to open any door you wish to enter.
Without a doubt, this song is one of the most simmering culminations offered by Ultimate Painting over the last few years, representing all that they do so well, and saddens my soul that the album this single is derived from has been put on hold … though with the number of pre-release items sold (and monies returned), it will only be a matter of time before the powers that be come to their senses and waste the world with this bit of hypnotic emancipation, otherwise, someone somewhere is going to leak the release, and neither James Hoare or Jack Cooper will realize a single dime from the splendid material gather together for the album Up!.

The single “I’m Not Gonna Burn Myself Anymore” comes in several packages … of course the most desirable is with the full colour image, similar to what the album would have looked like. Other versions include a white insert with a poly sleeve, with the others being simply the single in a poly sleeve. The material also varies, the version with the full colour image comes as both the single taken from the album, or that plus a radio edition, which is slightly shorter. The poly sleeve versions offer the same, some with the single lifted from the album, and some that include the radio edition.
