Stone Cold Fiction interview

Stone Cold Fiction’s ‘Strange Times’ is a very interesting experimental psychedelic rock with a DIY edge. It began as a collection of musical sketches conceived by the band following their previous efforts and showcases various departures from their typical sound.

Produced by Reuben Tyghe and working again with engineer Marc Jones, the songs were recorded live with minimal overdubs and additions to the mix.

Who’s in Stone Cold Fiction and what do you all play? Have you all made any changes to the lineup since you started or is this the original lineup?

Mr Matt Rowe on guitars and vocals, Stephen Beese on the bass and Alex Andrews on drums. We’re the original lineup, we’ve had guests play on records/share the stage at some gigs, but it’s always gunna be us three.

What do you consider to be your first real exposure to music?

I guess everyone has a different answer for this question… For me (Alex) I guess music was always there. I honestly can’t remember why I started playing drums, but music was always about growing up.

When and how did you all originally meet?

Matt and Stephen went to the same school and skated together. Then when we were 16 or 17 me and Stephen met via another short spanned out band and we just started playing together in my parents house for hours every Saturday. We used to drink lots of energy drinks and crisps.

What’s the story behind ‘Strange Times’ LP and how are you currently coping with the truly strange times we’re in?

We predicted the future… Haha! Times were pretty strange before all this though. The album is about lots of stuff lyrically but musically I suppose it’s just a reaction to us living together for two years and spending most nights a week jamming. Our own personal music tastes have broadened massively since moving to another city, living with each other and playing all the time.

What are some future plans?

It’s near impossible to plan in the current times but we have a bunch of new music written, hopefully when there’s money in the pot we can record the next record and release it next year, but, as of currently we’re broke from not playing any gigs. We have some gigs penciled in for 2021 but honestly who knows.

The world could’ve ended by then!
