The same crew as the boundary pulsing improvisation record ‘Bent Arcana’ has made a trajectory shift and picked up Ben Boye along the path. The aptly-named Moon-Drenched is the second installment from these sessions & keeps a heavy-lidded late night perspective on things as it eases from now somewhat familiar liminal twilight of skittering hues of black-blue and snaking street groove to fizzing off into the ether in pursuit of lunar prism beams heretofore unseen.
“A seven-minute improvisation on ‘Moon-Drenched’ — what’s not to like? We gathered around the campfire for a few sessions to pick our brains and see what concepts stuck. Eventually, we settled on a seemingly normal nighttime routine, but with a bent. We describe the concept as Jodorowsky doing his take on Martin Scorsese’s “The Big Shave.” Fortunately, the actors were down with our schemes, so we bought the toilets, sinks, and starbursted mirrors and got to work. The more rhythmically dialed bits here have a lysergic halo of strangeness to them, and the wispy bits between are spun of iridescent gossamer.
It sounds like a frizzled message from a future just filthy with guitar hoots echoing off of neon-splattered high rises, oil-slicked waterways and skittering digital beasts.
This is the strangest 12” slice of this last bunch of improvisations, the left turns more vertiginous, the flickering embers of repetition and recognition fly farther apart, as a steady procession of ever stranger wildlife circles the stereo space, nosing in to peek on what’s cooking. It’s something else and it’s out on Castle Face Records May 28th.
