‘Treading Water’ by Ponte Pilas | New Indie Rock Tune
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Treading Water’ by Berlin-based Ponte Pilas.
The Scottish-Ecuadorian quartet place sharp-edged riffs next to irresistible melodies to make their songs highly infectious. Their latest single, ‘Treading Water’, marks an introspective turn in the band’s direction, trading high-octane chaos for a more stripped back, soulful and slow-burn epic.
“The song is a raw, gut-punch of emotion that builds from singer Calum Bolland reflecting on a period of ennui and alienation over a bluesy guitar refrain. The band coalesce around a lazy groove that grows in intensity through the song before erupting into a jagged, electrifying guitar solo that brings a moment of cathartic epiphany: there is still hope.”
Written early last year, when the band’s touring plans for the year had been cancelled and the enormity of the challenges that 2020 would bring was just hitting home, the song reflects a time of transition into an entirely unfamiliar world. Recorded live, restrained musical arrangement and production elements drive this home alongside a bare, vulnerable vocal take.
The four members of Ponte Pilas have been recording music together since 2017. The latest recording was done exclusively with original 60s and 70s equipment at Impression Recordings in Berlin. Together with recording engineer Robbie Moore (Florence & the Machine, Babyshambles), mixing engineer Andy Baldwin (Björk, Oasis, The Who) and mastering engineer Mandy Parnell (Paul McCartney, Depeche Mode), this latest single represents another important development in the band’s journey.
