‘Sofar Nofar’ by The Skull Guru | Album Premiere
Exclusive album premiere of ‘Sofar Nofar’ by The Skull Guru, out April 30th, 2022.
The Skull Guru was created with the assumption that music can become a liberating expedient, trying to shake the bowels of the listener through the language of rock music. Since 2015 the band (half Spanish and half Italian) keeps on rockin in Madrid and Verona, mixing blues, doom, prog and stoner rock. In 2019, after three albums (‘Cosmic Hill’, ‘Diagrams of Pagan Life’ and ‘Umashi’s Odyssey’), Alberto Valmorisco (guitar) and Javi Burgos (bass) left the band. They have been replaced by two talented Italian musicians, Andrea Ballini (guitar) and Matteo Nigel Lonardi (bass).
The sound changed a bit, becoming heavier and darker, but conserving a lot of psychedelia and bluesy elements. For that reason the band (originally Slap Guru) picked up the very first name “The Skull Guru”.
‘Sofar Nofar’ is the upcoming album. It’s the fourth album, but somehow it represents the first of a new musical journey. The story the album tells is about a dystopian, partly apocalyptic future, with almost the whole world submerged by oceans. It is not necessarily a negative theme, it is also treated musically with lights and shadows. Also on the cover there is a clear reference to life that goes on even without human beings.

Musically the sound is more powerful, the guitars are more distorted, the riffs are more aggressive and the drums sound more compact, heavier. The voice moves in a free, psychotic way, with lysergic choirs, keeping the psychedelic component more than alive. The songs are shorter with the intention of being more incisive, less distracting than in the past. They are each different from the other, a choice they have made in each album, to touch as many musical influences as possible. Although there is a less prog component on this album, it is easy to perceive shades of doom, stoner, 70’s hard rock, southern metal, heavy blues and space rock.
The goal for the band was to merge them into a single coherent and evocative language with respect to the narration of the song lyrics.
