‘Party!’ by The Sugarland Express
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Party!’ by Sydney-based project The Sugarland Express.
The duo return to share new upbeat groove fuelled single ‘Party!’. Following from their debut single ‘What’s The Matter With The Music’, the talented duo have shown their aptitude for writing and recording infectiously dancey music with a vintage edge. With vocals and chordal arrangements reminiscent of The Beach Boys and the carefreeness of Babe Rainbow, The Sugarland Express are right at home in the Australian psychedelic revival as they push it further into the realm of disco and feel-good bops.
‘Party!’ sees the sunshine-psychedelic duo (Alex Carlo-Stella and Liam Robson) perform a groovy celebration song that calls for a dance revolution and the need to come together to spread love and festivities. Written and recorded in their home-studio and featuring guitar from Sunfruits frontman Winter McQuinn as well as a blistering Sax solo from Anthony Rositano, this track came together effortlessly for the band.
Alex Carlo-Stella explains that ‘Party!’ was recorded in my home studio, our writing and recording process is pretty much done together, so the bare bones for the track were all there and recorded on the day. From there we spent about a year adding the finer details to the track, trying to figure out what was needed. At that time we thought it’d be epic to have a 70s vibe sax solo after the second chorus. We were recommended by a friend to get in touch with Anthony Rositano who played and recorded the part from his home in Adelaide”.
The duo says that ‘Party!’ was written and inspired by tracks including ‘Hot Dog’ by Elvis as well as psych classic ‘The Golden Road’ by Grateful Dead. The band says, “Everything you need to know is right there in the title. We want to have a party and everyone is invited. Digging deeper though, it touches on some key ideas that are a part of the Sugarland ethos. We aim to write music for people to have a good time with, and we want to welcome everyone to join in from all walks of life. As the cliche goes “music is about bringing people together”, but really that’s what it should all boil down to. We definitely had the picture of a groovy 1960s party in our heads when we wrote this too, where everyone came to get down and boogie”.
From the Emerald city of Sydney/Eora, The Sugarland Express. Bonded together through a love of groovy tunes and 60’s counter-culture, Alex Carlo-Stella, and Liam Robson have been playing together since the early days of their clamorous high school years. Citing other revivalist masters in Babe Rainbow, Drugdealer, Bananagun, and Tex Crick, the duo have nailed an effervescent, effortless sound that’s covered in tin whistles, disco bass and drums, saxophone solos and harmonies to make you laugh and cry.
Their new single ‘Party!’ is a perpetual celebration of all that the band stands for. The song is an invitation to jump aboard The Sugarland Express train and once you listen, you won’t be able to step off.
