‘Hungry Little Bird’ is an upbeat song that has you dancing and singing along upon listening. It has a commercial pop vibe with a voice reminiscent of Brandi Carlile and songwriting like Joni Mitchell.
The beat and tempo are juxtaposed with the lyrics, which have a darker, more intense meaning about her partner’s battle with and triumph over anorexia. She sings “Starving to be seen, to be seen/Dying to be known, to be known/Weightless all alone, all alone”, a reminder to anyone feeling alone or adrift that they are loved and that they belong in this world.
“‘Hungry Little Bird’ was so fun to record”, shares Erika. “I love pairing the poignant lyrics with the uptempo arrangement. While the topic is quite serious it is our hope that the lingering feeling created by the arrangement is that of love, life, and belonging”.
