‘My Love Is Right’ by Laure Briard | New Album, ‘Ne pas trop rester bleue’

Exclusive track premiere of ‘My Love Is Right’ by Laure Briard, taken from the upcoming album, ‘Ne pas trop rester bleue’, out February 2023 via Third Eye Stimuli / Midnight Special Records / PWR Records.

As a worthy heiress to Françoise Hardy, Margo Guyan and Vashti Bunyan, Laure Briard has created intimate albums between realism and poetry. Performing in the field of pop, garage rock and bossa nova, she weaves small pieces of psychedelic ye-ye where sweetness combines with the cruelty of our existence. Today we have the pleasure of sharing Briard’s new single ‘My Love Is Right’ — a psychedelic pop/soul song about keeping faith in yourself and being confident in your love. It’s the first taste from her upcoming fourth album, ‘Ne pas trop rester bleue’

Warm piano and bass guitar set the tone of ‘My Love Is Right’ before a drum fill throws us into the verse, with Laure Briard’s vocals chanting; “I have to clean the bad vibrations, make everything ok”. The song shifts gears with layers of strings, vocal harmonies, guitar and keys pulling us up into the self affirming chorus. Tasteful orchestral embellishments combine with vintage rock instrumentation, creating a symphonic pop sound.

By the last chorus, we suddenly fall into a groovy outro led by a freeform flute solo — as if we have walked into a jazz club halfway through an improv jam. The track strikes a perfect balance of nostalgia and modernity, with Briard drawing influence from soul’s greats Carol King and Bobby Gentry, reimagining them into today’s hifi studio context.

The accompanying music video for ‘My Love Is Right’ is beautiful, dynamic and simple, featuring animated artwork by Lou Benesch.

‘My Love Is Right’ and the rest of Laure Briard’s new album ‘Ne pas trop rester bleue’ was born back in 2020, when she was holidaying in the sun-drenched desert of Joshua Tree, California — an inspiring and transformative experience for the artist. Once Briard returned home to France, she began to build on her ideas, working closely with loyal collaborators, Julien Gasc (Stereolab, Aquaserge) and Vincent Guyot.

“In the beginning, it was a piano/vocal demo I recorded on my phone”, says Briard. “Then I started working with Julien Gasc on guitar (at his house in Soustons near the ocean) and Vincent Guyot on the piano, who made the melody a little bit more sophisticated. We then went to the Nocturnes Studio for the whole album recording in one week.”

Laure Briard’s upcoming fourth album ‘Ne pas trop rester bleue’ took nearly three years to finish. The labour was long, enriched by her travels, and in the end, liberating. Fitting with its English translation ‘Don’t Stay Too Blue’, this album is lighter and more optimistic than some of Briard’s past material, it follows an autobiographical story punctuated with encounters. Carol King stands as a major influence, following the example of the singer activist, Laure Briard produces country imbued with soul, while her rough psychedelic sounds echo Cate le Bon and the romantic airy pop of Aldous Harding.

Laure Briard has been making music since 2013 and has released a prolific catalogue with four EPs and three albums, in which Briard sings in her native language French, English and recently, Portuguese. On her latest EP ‘Eu Voo’ (2021) and also ‘Coração Louco’ (2018), Briard collaborated with Brazilian psych outfit Boogarins. Her albums ‘Révélation’ (2015), ‘Sur la piste de danse’ (2016) and ‘Un peu plus d’amour s’il vous plaît’ (2019) are a blend of traditional French pop, summery psychedelia and bossa nova that revives 60s French ye-ye and transports her listeners to exotic places. Her 2021 EP ‘Eu Voo’ was released in Australia/New Zealand by Dinosaur City Records and received praise from the likes of Deafen County, Record Turnover, Verve Zine, and Atwood Magazine with high rotation on 2Ser Radio and more.
