‘Up In The Air’ by Big Slice | New Album, ‘One For The Road’

Exclusive track premiere of ‘Up In The Air’ by Big Slice, taken from the upcoming album, ‘One For The Road’, out November 25th 2022 via Label Fandango.

“‘Up In The Air’ was originally recorded on a 4 track and included quite a cheesy verse that ripped off ‘Bang’ by Blur. The demo then sat in a drawer until we decided to give it a listen at the end of the ‘One For The Road Sessions’ and decided that some of the song wasn’t half bad. The cheesy Blur bit was axed and Dave had fun adding all sorts of beats and bleeps. The structure is quite unorthodox – basically a short mantra on a loop but I think acts well as an album opener – hopefully draws the listener in as slightly mysterious and doesn’t give too much away. Plus the oo oos sound quite like a wood pigeon. Or a dove. Or a cuckoo”. Andy MacLeod – Pointy Birds

“‘One For The Road’ then. A mini-collection of psych rock nuggets cycling around your hapless noggin, riddled with guitaring jangles and cosmic melodic tangles. Sometimes Big Slice sounds like some lost cats from the other side of ’68, other times like new seekers on the C86 flexi express. The musical truth lies, as ever, somewhere in the middle of their short but winding road…”. Simon Williams, Fierce Panda Records

Songwriting brothers Andy & Dave Macleod made their first foray into the music industry when The Office creator Ricky Gervais managed their fledgling group The Pointy Birds, which led to recording sessions and gigs alongside britpop luminaries such as Suede and Echobelly. This fleeting brush with fame and celebrity eventually became the basis for the best selling memoir and live show Anoint My Head.

Thereafter Andy & Dave teamed up with French drummer Guillaume Boisselet, guitarist Sean Phillips and Phil “The Albino Priest” Ward – on loan from highly acclaimed electronic music act Lo Fidelity Allstars – to form Big Slice.

Combining classic pop tunes with soaring guitars, reflective lyrics and a dash of psychedelic Moog keyboard they released their first album ‘Don’t Mind If I Do’ in 2020.

Mastered by Chris Hornsby of Modern Hinterland and released by legendary indie veterans Label Fandango, the finely crafted songs took inspiration from a range of pop and alt rock acts such as Orange Juice, Echo & the Bunnymen, Happy Mondays, Talk Talk, Daft Punk, Kate Bush, Pavement, Blur and The Human League.

Follow up album ‘One For The Road’ was recorded in London across 2022 with production and additional vocals from Nainesh Shah of Flotation Toy Warning. Featuring more vintage pop songwriting it expanded on the original Big Slice sound with trademark angular guitars and synthetic dreamscape sounds.
