‘Ur My Best Friend’ by Chico Romano | New EP, ‘Vol. 5’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Ur My Best Friend’ by Chico Romano, taken from his upcoming EP, ‘Vol. 5’, out October 7th.
Rising from the ashes of Professor Caveman, multi-media artist Rob Romano returns with ‘Vol. 5’ as Chico Romano with tasteful guitar stylings, elaborate instrumentation, and a fearlessness to sonically reach in any direction.
Chico Romano, the artist formerly known as Professor Caveman, releases ‘Ur My Best Friend’, the second single off his forthcoming EP ‘Vol. 5’. The New Jersey based musician’s latest batch of songs is a series of vignettes exploring love amidst confusion, weaving together Motown funk and bedroom pop, Tropacália and 60s soul, MPB and colorful psych into lean and emotional songwriting. With the help of John Evers of The Jack Moves, Arthur Shea, a.k.a. ARTHUR of indie pop ensemble Joy Again, and Carlos Hernandez of the bands Ava Luna and Carlos Truly, the Dominican American pulls inspiration from the multicultural concept of “latinidad”, blending worlds of influence into a homespun lo-fi pop excursion that’s uniquely his own.
Regarding ‘Ur My Best Friend’, Romano offered a few words: “Nothing hurts more than losing a friend. Here’s an ode to all the friends we’ve made and friends we’ve lost”.
Romano describes his approach to lyrics and songcraft in impressionistic terms, using tentpole themes like love and confusion as starting points for hybridized emotional spaces. He admits that it’s hard for him not to be “sappy” when writing this style of music, yet he tempers that impulse with evocative, free-associative left-turns meant to throw listeners off balance and speak to the chaos of modern life.
He emphasizes a desire above all to show his appreciation and love for others amidst the turmoil. His songwriting and production captures this same energy: a desire to pile complex layers and far-flung influences together into dense fields of sound, while reaching us as a friendly voice to show us a path towards some potential conception of joy.
