‘Velvet Sunshine’ by Mike Tony
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Velvet Sunshine’ by Tampa, FL. based singer-songwriter, producer, and composer Mike Tony, out February 14th.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of Eric Burdon, Scott Walker and even Tom Jones, his powerful voice is that of an unknown legend. With sonic aesthetics drawn from the mid-century and modern day in equal measure, Mike Tony revels in a lush, romantic soundscape that showcases his feverishly catchy melodies, sweeping string arrangements and clever lyricism.
Tony got his start in music in 2002 as the songwriter and frontman for Très Bien, a retro garage-rock quartet inspired by The Sonics, The Strokes, The Make-Up, and Les Savy Fav. For the following decade, Tony and Très Bien worked at a breakneck pace, producing, recording and releasing seven full-length albums between 2002 and 2012.
In 2007, Très Bien was featured on FOX’s, The Next Great American Band, remaining on the nationally televised competition for 7 weeks, and ultimately earning 6th place overall. Shortly after the show, the band was picked up by Island/Def Jam’s A&R Rob Stevenson, and placed in their Artist Development program before the program was dropped in 2009.
Following the dissolution of Très Bien, Tony relocated to Los Angeles where he made a living as a professional marijuana farmer, while drumming in LVLS, a local grunge-rock trio, and playing guitar in the Venice Symphony Orchestra.
In 2018, Tony once again relocated, this time moving to Atlanta, GA, recording under the moniker Rollingchild, and releasing his debut solo LP, ‘Post Party Depression,’ produced by Randy Michael (Curtis Harding, Mattiel). ‘Post Party Depression’ was picked up and rereleased by Burger Records in 2019, which led to Rollingchild being booked to open for Irish power-pop legends Protex at SXSW 2020.
With the simultaneous rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, and higher-ups at Burger Records being brought to reckoning, Tony moved back to Tampa, Florida and committed to working on new material. Tony’s brand new single ‘Velvet Sunshine,’ a love letter to his significant other, is the first material to be released from those writing sessions, ushering in a new era in Tony’s career as an artist.
‘Velvet Sunshine,’ (mixed and mastered by Jonah Swilley and Jordan Manly of Mattiel) is at once bright and hazy, invoking trippy visuals of lava lamps, paisley, and the taste of fresh-squeezed OJ between hits from a spliff. Tony delivers Millennial beatnik prose reminiscent of Beck with a vocal delivery that is laidback, fluid, and full of swagger, atop an infectious bass groove, psychedelic sitar, and rattling tambourine. ‘Velvet Sunshine’ revels in its hybrid retro-modern sensibility that will have audiences hooked and ready to roll another.
