‘Queenie Pie’ by Davis IL | New Album, ‘Half-wild’

Exclusive video premiere of ‘Queenie Pie’ by Davis IL taken from the latest album, ‘Half-wild’.

A brand new music video from Davis IL is out today with the intent to lodge itself in your brain. ‘Queenie Pie’ is its name and its 4-minute rhapsody is funkier than a mosquito’s tweeter.

Loosely inspired by famed dancer Carol Doda and the environs she made famous, the lyrics namecheck locales of the notorious North Beach, San Francisco district she called home. The video provides all the Barbary Coast vibe and neon-soaked imagery to those “who need darkness just as much as they need light”.

Filmed on an Oakland soundstage with an entire film crew, the video juxtaposes various iconography of the infamous Broadway corridor with live performance footage of the band doing it with verve- dig that horn section! There’s also a fierce femme lead who makes her presence known in cutscenes that add to the mystique.

“I never really wrote a story song but this one definitely had my home of SF in mind” says Davis IL. “There’s a lotta name-dropping in tribute to The City’s past and the matriarch that Ms. Doda was. I wrote it only after many years soaking up the nightlife of that neighborhood.”

Directed by Chelsea Nobbs with live audio recorded direct-to-tape by David Lipps, it’s not just a music video but a live, raw “bootleg” of a band ripping through sections with peel-the-paint-from-the-walls intensity and ascendant, star-burst choruses. At times providing a highly danceable disco groove at others blasting away with discordant free jazz horns. “It’s all about the musical trojan horse for me” he says.

If you’re in Los Angeles, head to The Escondite on April 12 for Davis IL’s Video Release Show & public screening!
