‘Where Did I Go?’ by Squash | EP Premiere
Exclusive EP premiere of ‘Where Did I Go?’ by psych trash band Squash, out April 20th via Sad Milk Collective.
Squash from Lowell, MA, USA are featuring members of Inspector 34, Dad Doxxxer, and Disco Volante. After dropping their long- awaited album ‘Whatever It’s Like Is That’s What’s Happening,’ they played a few more shows and then vanished from the earth. With their latest EP ‘Where Did I Go?’ it seems, is in on the joke – especially considering the opening cut happens to be the title track of their last album.
Yet it’s wrong to assume this is just a collection of outtakes that didn’t make the grade, as this 15-minute blast of murky basement air was produced fresh from the gang’s bowels. Their usual meticulous overdubs are generally laid aside in favor of a looser, more raw sound, leaving you feeling like you’re back at Thirsty’s all over again.
The crooked stomp of ‘Whatever’ wastes no time getting started, pummeling you with some of the raunchiest riffs ever laid to disk. Then ‘Somehow Nothing’ slides into your ears like a warm bath, carried along by wandering guitar lines and Ben’s warbly vocals. Wrapping it all up is the extended siren song of ‘Smokingman’s Dead’ which lets those solos go on as long as you always wanted, and then some more. Ryan’s pained invocations threaten to send you into a drunken depression, then crack open another silver bullet from the 30-rack and tell you to never stop headbanging. In between we’re left with little reminders that Squash, behind (in front of?) the wall of amplifiers, is just a few guys making music because it’s fun.
“This was actually the first song we wrote together after not being able to play together for over a year because of the COVID shutdown. Maybe for that reason it ended up being one of our most collaborative compositions, with everyone having a lot of say in the songwriting process. It’s a pretty different sound to a lot of what we’ve done in the past, but hey change can be a good thing. We recorded and produced it ourselves, live and with minimal overdubs, in the same living room where we played our final show as a band less than a month later. The video consists of a collage of pictures and videos that were taken by members of the audience at that very show, in that very living room – so it’s kinda as close as you can get to having been there with us. Maybe someday we’ll all get together and record something else, but for now this EP will be our last hurrah. We feel pretty good about that.”
