‘Empires’ by Maorooro | Album Premiere

Exclusive album premiere of ‘Empires’ by Maorooro, out May 12th, 2023 via Dissipatio.

A research on possible timbral encounters between percussion and electric guitar, aimed to make them indistinguishable. A sound force that generates dimensions and worlds, where the dramaturgical narration does not necessarily have to be present, since the sound itself already tells and describes. The form takes second place in favor of the timbre, which outlines unknown languages, fantastic machines, microorganisms, alien vegetation with new and curious colors and shapes. Contemplating in a suspended time, allowing yourself to be surprised by the amazement of new visions.

Maorooro consists of Luca Perciballi and Francesco Cigana.

Luca Perciballi is guitarist, composer and electroacoustic musician. His career started combining a training as an improviser with a path as a composer in the field of contemporary music, studying in Italy and The Netherlands. His work is focused on instrumental practice and a compositional approach (traditional and electroacoustic) that starts from a performative gesture. Perciballi pursues a research where the musical matter is dominated by sound as an organoleptic agent and related to a dense network of references and memories. In addition to his solo production, he is leader of Organic Gestures and has collaborated with many of the leading figures in the jazz and improvisational scene such as Butch Morris, Roberto Bonati, Roberto Dani, Anthony Moreno, Alessandro Bosetti, Dave Burrell, Barre Phillips, Thomàs de Pourquery. As a composer, he has received commissions from Tempo Reale, the Italian Cultural Institute of Culture in Paris, ensembles such as Discantor, and collaborates with directors Francesco Barozzi and Michele Aldino.

Active in multidisciplinary fields, he collaborates with actors such as Oscar de Summa and choreographers such as Simona Bertozzi Tireless creative mind, Francesco Cigana explores his own expressive potential using percussion instruments as a medium, mainly through improvisational practice. The result is an approach linked to timbre and melodic research, to the hypnotic-ritual dimension and to the sound/noise border. He collaborates with many Italian and international musicians in various formations and ensembles, but for years he has also deepened the solo dimension through different formats that include performances in the dark, soundtracks, site specific performances or more classic frontal concerts. He founded the DOOOM Orchestra, orchestra and laboratory focused on improvisation, of which he is director and teacher, and in 2018 he was called as speaker and final performer at the TedX in Vicenza “From ME to WE,” to tell his musical experience, performing precisely with the DOOOM Orchestra at the Teatro Comunale in Vicenza. He has performed in Romania, Spain, France, England, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Poland, Ukraine, for the European Commission and in festivals such as the Grand North Festival (UK), Eschwege Open Flair, Festival (DE) Rai Uno, Rai Radio 1, Padova Jazz Festival (IT), NoN Festival (IT), Love Between The Lines ( BE), Ulica Festival, (UKR), MART (IT), Tempo Reale (IT) Home Festival, Mirano Summer Festival, Ama Music Festival, Suoni di Marca, Steinegg Live Festival (IT), Padua University Art Center (IT), Theater Am Zee (BE), Suedtirol Jazz Festival (IT) and many others. Francesco is also the artistic director of “A Love Supreme Impro Festival,” a music festival linked to avant-garde music and improvisation, and winner of numerous awards and open call.
