Firmaet Forvoksen
Firmaet Forvoksen is the Norwegian duo of Gaute Granli and Thore Warland. ‘Undone Shal’ is their debut album, which came out last year on Kraak.
Firmaet Forvoksen has elements of early to mid 2000s free folk, form Belgian funeral folk to Finnish underground (think The Anaksimandros and Tumutonttu) and US freak folk (think Sunburned Hand Of The Man, No Neck Blues Band and Jackie-O-Motherfucker), but there’s also the commune music of Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane and Järnakollektivet, ‘Schwarzwaldfahrt’ by Brötzmann and Bennink, and the concrète noise of To Live And Shave In L.A.
“Off and scary”
For how long have you been knowing each other?
Thore Warland: We have known each other for almost 20 years. We have been playing in different constellations together since high school, it is a bit strange that we didn’t form a proper band earlier.
Is there a link to jazz and folk in your music?
We are constantly testing different ideas. Sometimes we get into something that sounds more interesting to us, Then we might stay there for a while.
Is the music on ‘Undone Shal’ the result of improvisation? Or “songs” in a way?
It’s mostly improvisation, but we work a lot on the sounds together. In general we are not too excited about improvisational music, so we try to avoid a lot of stuff.
Do each of you have a specific role within this band? Who does what?
Gaute is playing synths, guitar and effects, I do percussive stuff and some electronics.
How do you interact with each other? What is the relationship between you two, musically?
I have a feeling that it is cooler when people don’t interact too much in experimental music, maybe that is something we are trying here also.
‘Undone Shal’ sounds mainly like an acoustic affair.
We suddenly came upon this combination of sounds which excited us, and also the room we recorded in really helped us shape it. So we decided to follow that track until we had something we liked.
The live version of Firmaet Forvoksen sounds more electronic. Why?
I don’t know, it just happened.
Where was ‘Undone Shal’ recorded?
We recorded in a cabin owned by Gautes parents. The room we decided to use there was really perfect!
Do you see the music on ‘Undone Shal’ as psychedelic?
We try to explore musical territories which are a bit off and scary, this creates a strange tension which I like a lot.
