‘Looked Just Like Jesus’ by Sarah Mary Chadwick | New Album, ‘Messages to God’
New Zealand born, Melbourne-based Sarah Mary Chadwick have a new single out, ‘Looked Just Like Jesus’ taken from her upcoming album, ‘Messages to God,’ out September 15th via Kill Rock Stars.
Sarah Mary Chadwick eighth studio album was produced by Tony Espie (The Avalanches). It is a beautifully realized record. It’s not happy, but it is funny and optimistic. It is melodramatic, self-serving and generous. This record signals a change; whether profound or momentary, in the New Zealand artist’s discography.
New album cut ‘Looked Just Like Jesus’ is released today, delicately textured and full of little synth flickers and tremors. Fiercely personal and delivered with a wink, Chadwick shares, “My Mother thought that my first boyfriend looked like an artist’s rendition of Jesus that she had hanging on her classroom wall at the Catholic school she taught at. Jesus on the wall had blue eyes and sandy coloured collar length floaty hair, and golden skin. I like to indulge in an idea of God. It gives a name to a feeling of being in love with how beautiful the world is.”
The music video was directed and filmed by Stacey Sian.
Chadwick has described her most recent three records as a triptych – three pieces of work drenched in grief and struggling to get out. This record signals a change; whether profound or momentary, time will tell. There is an undoubted strength and love of life underpinning these songs, and a feeling less claustrophobic than her earlier work.
