‘From Villarosa to Rotherham’ by Romano Nervoso | Album Premiere
Exclusive album premiere of ‘From Villarosa to Rotherham’ by Romano Nervoso, out March 8, 2024, via Mottow Soundz.
In just a few brief years, Romano Nervoso and his Italian-Belgian band of misfits have made a significant impact on the Italian music scene, blazing through venues ranging from local bars to Europe’s largest concert halls and festivals. Known as the undeniable “Godfather of Spaghetti Rock,” Nervoso’s magnetic stage presence and unique style make him a valuable addition to any venue.
With four studio albums already in their repertoire and a resume that includes opening for esteemed artists like Johnny Hallyday, Triggerfinger, The Datsuns, The Sonics, and King Khan & The Shrines, the time has come for Romano Nervoso to once again claim the spotlight with the eagerly awaited release of his new album, ‘From Villarosa to Rotherham.’
This album, divided into two parts, pays homage to Nervoso’s roots. The first part features songs in Italian, honoring his hometown, while the second part shifts focus to Rotherham, with six tracks in English dedicated to his beloved wife from the South Yorkshire town. Created in just under four weeks, ‘From Villarosa to Rotherham’ channels the raw energy of punk rock, delivering short, spontaneous songs in Nervoso’s unmistakable style.
Track-by-track breakdown by lead singer Giacomo Panarisi:
‘Siculo Nervoso’ – “’Siculo’ is slang and translated, the title of this song means, nervous Sicilian. It’s about the war between the North and South of Italy. I’m a “siculo nervoso” but when I’m onstage I become Romano Nervoso. It’s my primal scream whenever I encounter racism against the South.”
‘Christian D’Oria Ha Perso La Memoria’ – “Loosely translated this one is “Christian D’Oria lost his memory”. Christian is the guy who helped me with the Italian lyrics on the album and the song is about the way governments around the world are choking the population with fake crises, taxes, poverty…”
‘Non Ti Scordare del Passato’ – “Quite simply this one is a reminder to not forget the past. It’s about a love story with no limits.”
‘Senso della Vita’ – “The song is about a romantic relationship between two individuals who don’t understand each other. They are pretending to be in love, and realizing that despite everything, they are fortunate to have each other. Consequently, one of them seeks the meaning of life to understand the situation they find themselves in.”
‘Invisibile/Invicibile’ – “Invisible/Invincible! The fact that in any kind of situation I can be both, whatever people think about me.”
‘Il Tempo di Morire’ – “Translated, this song title means, “the time to die” and it’s about the end of the world as we know it.”
‘Per Scaramanzia’ – “‘Per Scaramanzia’ means, out of luck or superstition. We Sicilians are very superstitious. That is why we wear collars with Christian signs, we touch our balls when we see a black cat, or we do the horns with our hands to avoid the bad eye/bad luck.”
‘Lontano Da Te’ – “This song is about losing the love of your life and living another day without the woman you love the most.”
‘It’s Halloween’ – “We released this song as a single last October because by quite some distance, Halloween is my favourite day of the year. I’m a huge fan of horror, aliens, spirits, monsters and everything that comes with it.”
‘Children of the Sun’ – “The vocals and the Farfisa on ‘Children of the Sun’ were performed by Nicole Laurenne, the singer of American garage band The Darts who I met at a festival. I asked her if she was down to record this song with us and was psyched when she agreed. It’s about Sicilians, people from the south of Italy. My roots. It’s about all the “clichés” you can say about them. Things like, “they don’t like to work,” “they always eat,” “they love fiestas,” “they are mobsters”… Sadly, we have this reputation… but I’m really proud of it, ’cos it’s almost true.”
‘Electrified’ – “It’s a song about taking the piss out of the new generation. The hipsters, the influencers… everything that goes with it, I just hate profoundly.”
‘The Man Behind the Mask’ – “This track is about people who don’t like me, and there are a lot. It’s specially dedicated to a guy who broke my balls for years and years. He tried to attack me but always from behind a computer. He never had the balls to confront me in person.”
‘Dead Man Shoes’ – “It’s about being dead. Whether you arrive in heaven or hell it’s about watching the story of your life from above or below.”
