‘Maurine’ by Shitty Person | New Album, ‘Dignity’

Exclusive video premiere of ‘Maurine’ by Seattle’s eclectic ensemble Shitty Person, taken from the latest album, ‘Dignity’.

‘Dignity’ is a melodic exploration of shame and introspection veiled in a chaotic blend of lo-fi spaghetti Western psych-folk. Led by Benjamin Thomas-Kennedy of Lesbian and somesurprises fame, the album features collaboration with luminaries like grunge icon Tad Doyle and cellist Lori Goldston, weaving a tapestry of raw, psychedelic distress.

With roots tracing back to their debut ‘Judgment,’ Shitty Person’s evolution is palpable. While their earlier work resonates with Spacemen 3 vibes, ‘Dignity’ emerges as a poignant aftermath, reflecting on the consequences of sonic chaos.

Amid pandemic-induced introspection, Thomas-Kennedy’s return from paper collages to music birthed ‘Dignity’. Recorded in collaboration with Doyle and a stellar lineup, including percussionist Dave Abramson and bassist Nicole Thomas-Kennedy, the album embodies a shift in tone, embracing vulnerability without forsaking their signature edge.

Benjamin Thomas-Kennedy says about the single, “I am addicted to making analog collages and writing songs about shame. This video is the perfect marriage of the two.”

The video was directed by Adam MacKinnon.

While divergent in sound, ‘Dignity’ isn’t a departure but rather a natural progression for Shitty Person. Thomas-Kennedy’s refusal to settle into a definitive sound underscores the band’s perpetual evolution, hinting at a newfound sincerity within the album’s introspective depths.
