Just under six months since the release of their dynamic second album, ‘Électrons libres du Québec,’ Population II returns with ‘R.B.,’ offering a glimpse into their upcoming EP, ‘Serpent Échelle,’ set to release on April 17, 2024. Oscillating between orchestral and lysergic riffs, the band delves into the contemporary urgency of navigating global crises while celebrating life’s simple joys such as love, friendship, and wine. Notable elements of the song include Tristan Lacombe’s farfisa, Sébastien Provençal’s melodic bass, Pierre-Luc Gratton’s enigmatic vocals, and Emmanuel Ethier’s violin contributions.
Dedicated to honing their bold yet unpretentious sound, Population II, comprised of Pierre-Luc Gratton, Tristan Lacombe, and Sébastien Provençal, effortlessly blend improvised chaos with intricate compositions. Their music fuses heavy psychedelic rock with feverish funk, hints of jazz, echoes of punk’s raw energy, and a penchant for minor scales reminiscent of heavy metal’s origins. Pierre-Luc’s distinctive vocals and introspective, offbeat lyrics further distinguish the band.
Drawing inspiration from diverse sources beyond music, including Detroit garage rock, psychedelic funk, the Canterbury scene, German experimental rock, and the eclectic era of Miles Davis, Population II crafts a sound uniquely their own. Rooted in the camaraderie among its members and the atmospheric backdrop of Pointe-Calumet, the band maintains a distance from Montreal’s music scene, cultivating their singular style. Their timeless sound defies trends, positioning Population II as an enigmatic force, equally defined by hazy atmospheres and cathartic outbursts.
The band’s journey traces back to their teenage years, marked by countless jam sessions that forged a telepathic connection. Their independent releases caught the attention of John Dwyer, leading to the release of their debut album, ‘À la ô Terre,’ in 2020 under Castle Face Records. Over the following years, Population II toured extensively in Canada and the United States, making notable appearances at SXSW, Pop Montreal, and various cities including Toronto, New York, and Quebec City.
