‘Canyons pt. 1’ by The Color Study | EP Premiere

Exclusive EP premiere of ‘Canyons pt. 1’ by The Color Study, out June 14th 2024.

‘Canyons’ offers a lush and expansive exploration of the universe’s vastness and our place within it through its three tracks. Scott Oliphant, frontman of the Bend, OR-based band, delves into existential themes, juxtaposing the cold void of space with the warmth of human connection and love. The opening track, ‘An Anthem,’ serves as a cathartic promise to return to loved ones, propelled by the chemistry of the six-piece ensemble. ‘Life on a String’ presents a piano-driven reflection on detachment and floating into nothingness, while the titular track ‘Canyons’ finds resolution in the pursuit of love across time and space.

“Canyons are these deep scars in the landscape, sometimes dark, sometimes light, places where you might get lost or maybe find some beauty, twisting and turning unexpectedly, unknown. I really felt a connection to a lot of what I write about with life, love, and loss, and what happens to us and how we are shaped by the presence of those things. ‘Canyons Pt. 1’ is the first of a multi-part release; it’s also the first music we’ve been able to record live as a band to put out in the world. The second album, ‘Future Past Present Tense,’ was made piecemeal during COVID, and the first self-titled album was made solo.” – Scott Oliphant

Formed in 2020, The Color Study’s evolution in sound is evident in this EP, recorded live in a collaborative setting, capturing the communal warmth amidst themes of existential dread.
