‘Tethers’ by Terra Black | Interview | New Album

After signing with Bonebag Records, Gothenburg rockers Terra Black are excited to announce the rerelease of their 2023 debut and offer a preview of their future with the new single, ‘Tethers.’

Their debut album, ‘All Descend,’ originally released digitally last year, conjured dark atmospheres and Dante-esque soundscapes that awakened many a stoner with its themes of the Devil, demons, Wicca lore, and celestial destiny. The band’s sound, characterized by cosmic vocals, melancholic yet melodic choruses, and heavy doom-laden passages, has evolved significantly since their inception in 2020.

“We finally saw them perform live at House of Metal in Umeå and were blown away by their sound and stage presence,” says Bonebag Records owner, Max Malmer. “We’re thrilled to give their debut album an official physical release and are eager to collaborate closely on their next album, which they’re currently recording.”

Eager to move forward with their second album, the band has released the new single ‘Tethers’ as a promotional track. Intentionally raw and unpolished, it offers a profound dive into a doom-filled realm of cosmic noise and sinister melody.

“The song symbolizes something that prevents the things we desire from slipping away,” explains singer/guitarist, Ezgi. “It’s a metaphor that goes beyond the material. As a standalone single, it signifies that what we choose to tether isn’t always benign.”

‘All Descend’ by Terra Black will be reissued by Bonebag Records on July 28, 2024, and is available for pre-order now.

“The next album will probably sound like ‘Tethers’ with a more minimalistic production compared to All Descend.”

How does it feel to be working with your fellow countrymen at Bonebag Records on the re-release of 2023’s ‘All Descend?’

It feels great! Max at Bonebag Records has been easy to work with, and things have gone smoothly so far. He involves us in every step of the process, and it’s nice to see what goes on behind the scenes, so to speak. ‘All Descend’ incorporates much of what is the “Terra Black-sound,” everything from delicate, airy verses to black hole-like heaviness, and a physical release fits right in. It’s something you (at least we) want to hold, not least because of the amazing cover art by Diogo Soares.

It feels like you’ve been working toward the release of your next album for some time now. Where are you currently at with writing and recording? When can we expect it out, and in what ways does it differ from your debut?

Correct, right now we are working on finalizing a bunch of songs for our second full-length album. We’re in the final stages of writing and recording, with just a few lyrics left to complete and some finishing touches to apply. We’re aiming for a release sometime next year, though we’re committed to “quality before quantity,” so we don’t have a firm deadline just yet. As far as we know right now, the next album will probably sound like ‘Tethers’ with a more minimalistic production compared to ‘All Descend.’ The overall theme seems to become quite dark and ominous.

‘Tethers’ is the first taste of new material from the band. How excited are you to get it out there for others to hear?

We are super excited to release ‘Tethers’ as a stand-alone single. The 7:20 minutes contain a mix of softness and heaviness with suggestive lyrics, very “Terra Black,” and it is always fun to receive responses from listeners. ‘Tethers’ is also special because we played it live for the first time at the Umeå House of Metal Festival, where our journey with Bonebag Records actually started. There is something very special about that song. Despite its complexity and dynamics, everything went very smoothly and quickly in the recording session. Additionally, when we decided to play it live for the first time, we rehearsed the song the day before on an 11-hour night train to the north of Sweden. We hope that we can deliver our feelings as much as possible with ‘Tethers’!

Can you tell us what a typical writing and recording session looks like for Terra Black? Do band members have defined roles, or do you all contribute lyrics and production ideas?

We don’t have defined roles, except that everyone knows their instruments best. However, we all are, and have been, part of the songwriting process. A typical process is that one of us comes up with a riff, and we either have a jam session on it or we add our personal ideas to develop the riff. We have good musical chemistry in the band, so most of the time we don’t even need to explain in detail how we want the song to be; it comes together very naturally. When it feels like the right time to record our material, we first record one or two demos (depending on how many corrections we need). When we feel ready, we record it in our rehearsal studio. The recordings are all live takes with varying degrees of dubs and add-ons. Isak (the band’s guitarist) has been handling the recording and mixing, and we owe him many thanks. We support each other in every step of the recording process, so even when it’s time for vocals, every member is there and helping.

What are your plans between now and the release of album number two? Do you plan to tour or play live in 2024?

Our focus for the rest of the year is to finalize the songs for the second album, create demo versions, and finally record it. Alongside this, we will perform live here in Sweden at festivals and smaller clubs during the summer and autumn. We always have ideas on what we want to do next, and one thing is that it would be awesome to plan a tour for the upcoming year!
