Seasurfer Revives The Cure: Exclusive Premiere of ‘A Short Term Effect’

Exclusive video premiere of Seasurfer’s cover of The Cure’s classic track, ‘A Short Term Effect.’

Over the past two years, Seasurfer’s driving force, Dirk Knight, collaborated with guest vocalists for various singles. However, Apolonia is now back in the fold, lending her voice once again after her contributions to their last LP, ‘Zombies,’ as well as several EPs and singles released through US label Saint Marie Records and Cologne’s Reptile Music.

Their take on The Cure’s 1982 track from the ‘Pornography’ album is not just a straightforward cover but a unique reimagining, infused with melodic layers and a danceable beat—a perfect addition to alternative club playlists. The single’s B-side features a fast-paced, noisy dreampunk mix of ‘The End,’ a teaser from Seasurfer’s upcoming album ‘Electronic Monsters,’ showcasing the track in a more electronic form.

The final polish on these tracks comes courtesy of Jason Corbett, the mastermind behind Canada’s The Actors, who praised the project: “Killer tracks! I love working on your new material. So good.” Dirk Knight shares the enthusiasm: “I’m so happy that Apolonia is back, it feels like a band again. And to start with a Cure track is great. I’m into the Cure since the early 80’s and the ‘Pornography’ album is still in my Top 10. This interpretation is also a nod to Robert Smith and his band.”

Based in Hamburg, Germany, Dirk Knight has been at the helm of the ethereal dreampop band Dark Orange since the late ’80s before founding Seasurfer in 2013. Across four albums, EPs, and singles, he has worked with an array of talented vocalists, including Dorian E. from Berlin, Julia from dreampop band Chandeen, Elena Alice Fossi from Kirlian Kamera, Krissy Vanderwoude from US shoegaze act Whimsical, and Apolonia. His work has garnered attention from some of the genre’s luminaries, with Cocteau Twins bassist Simon Raymonde listing the last Seasurfer album ‘Zombies’ among his Top 10 albums of 2020, and Slowdive guitarist Christian Savill naming ‘Too Wild’ as one of his favorite tracks during a US radio special by DKFM in June 2022. Knight has also collaborated with Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins and John Fryer (4AD, Mute Records, This Mortal Coil).
