La Cozna’s ‘Blanche Biche’: A Haunting Medieval Tale Reimagined in Surreal Animation

La Cozna, the avant-garde French folk quartet, has made a powerful debut with their latest album, blending modern experimental sounds with traditional French melodies.

Their track ‘Blanche Biche,’ which draws from a haunting medieval tale set in Brittany, is brought to life through an evocative music video by Virgile Jardin.

“Blanche biche is a song that dates back to the Middle Ages and is set in Brittany,” explains La Cozna. “The lyrics remind us of witch hunts, which were brutal and often associated with sexual violence.” In this tragic tale, Marguerite, who morphs into a mystical white deer—a symbol found in Celtic lore—falls victim to her brother’s lethal hunt. The song’s arrangement features a singular melodic motif, meticulously fragmented among the band members, creating a complex web of rhythmic textures and evolving tones that gradually dissolve into a chilling soundscape.

The music video, a captivating stop-motion paper-cut animation directed by Virgile Jardin, intertwines elements of surrealism and horror. It portrays Marguerite’s desperate flight through the forest, her facade of cheerfulness crumbling as she is relentlessly pursued by her brother Renaud. Jardin’s visual narrative intensifies the song’s dark themes, immersing viewers in a hauntingly beautiful experience.
