‘America’ by Sam Kogon

Sam Kogon’s new single, ‘America,’ hits on November 1, right as the 2024 election chatter kicks into high gear.

This track takes a close look at today’s political climate, touching on the pressing issues of our time in a way that feels relevant. The idea for ‘America’ sparked during the intense lockdown days and protest waves, capturing the pulse of a nation wrestling with its core values. Through pointed lyrics, Kogon dives into topics like voting rights, social justice, and healthcare—a mix of themes that sit heavy, yet he wraps them in his knack for catchy, insightful songwriting.

Behind the scenes, Kogon teamed up with Jeff Berrall from Caveman and Zach Brewer (known for his work with Paolo Nutini) to co-produce, bringing an organic feel to the track. Kogon adds his own touch, layering vocals, guitar, and organ, while Graeme Gengras’s piano and Caveman’s rhythm section complete the sound. The final mix came together under the expert ear of John Agnello, a studio legend with credits alongside Dinosaur Jr. and Kurt Vile, giving the song its emotive edge.

This release is just the beginning, with a full album recorded with Agnello earlier this year. Kogon’s fans, who rallied around his acclaimed 2022 EP, are bound to hear even more growth in his latest work.

Over the years, Kogon has collaborated with some serious names, including Al Jardine of The Beach Boys and Patty Smyth. He’s even fronted The Left Banke, the classic band behind ‘Walk Away Renee,’ which has only expanded his musical depth and versatility.

The chorus in America sums up the restlessness many are feeling today: You bought it, you broke it / How come nothing gets done right around here? / You built it, now fix it / We can’t wait another 4 more years.” It’s a call for accountability that resonates as the election nears.
