Diving Deep into Japanese Psych: Yaryu’s ‘For Damage’—Exclusive Album Premiere

Get ready for the exclusive premiere of ‘For Damage’ by Yaryu, slated for release on October 25th via Centripetal Force (North America), Cardinal Fuzz (UK), and Ramble Records (AUS).

Get ready for something truly special—Yaryu’s ‘For Damage’ is set to drop on October 25th, and it’s not an album to miss. Brought to you by Centripetal Force (North America), Cardinal Fuzz (UK), and Ramble Records (AUS), this release is available on vinyl, CD, and digital formats, offering a unique blend of meditative New Age improvisational jazz, and traditional Japanese folk into something truly unique.

Formed in 2022, Yaryu isn’t your typical band. With over 200 musicians having contributed to their live performances, recordings, and workshops, this collective thrives on collaboration and spontaneity. Founded by keyboardist/harpist Hyozo (De Lorians) and Indian flute/harpist Hajime Orikawa, the group has become a hub for musicians across genres. On ‘For Damage,’ the lineup features heavyweights like Shota Mizuno (Sunday & Cybele), Takuro Okada (Carlos Niño, Sam Gendel), Makoto Kawabata (Acid Mothers Temple), and more, giving the album a depth and richness that resonates through every track.

The album itself is an evocative journey through sound, balancing lush, ambient soundscapes like ‘Up the Creek’ and ‘Asobe’ with intricate rhythms on tracks like ‘Utena’ and ‘Gandhara.’ It explores organic song structures on ‘Nagare’ and touches on subtle psychedelia in ‘Shirabe,’ making it perfect for both deep reflection and moments of escape. Drawing from the pioneering work of 1970s Japanese psych-jazz fusion artists like Osamu Kitajima and Fumio Miyashita, Yaryu pushes those influences into fresh, uncharted territory, creating a sound that’s distinctly modern and forward-thinking.

Through their workshops and live performances, they welcome musicians of all skill levels to join the creative process, breaking down traditional barriers between artist and audience. As Hyozo explains, Yaryu emphasizes the collective experience, where everyone contributes to the shared sound, regardless of skill level. This philosophy is the beating heart of ‘For Damage.’

With ‘For Damage,’ Yaryu has crafted a transformative record that not only offers space for calm and reflection but also celebrates the joy and spontaneity of creation.
