Dreams and reality have always danced in tangled rhythms, and ZAÄAR’s upcoming album ‘Ovules’ is the soundtrack to that cosmic waltz. Inspired by the ancient Chinese fable ‘The Dream of the Butterfly’ (莊周夢蝶) by Tchouang-Tseu, this Belgian avant-garde collective crafts a sonic exploration of perception and transformation. Is life the dream, or are we the dreamers? ‘Ovules’ blurs the lines, pulling listeners into a surrealist jazz vortex where improvisation reigns supreme.

Recorded in various atmospheric spaces across Belgium, ‘Ovules’ is an experiment, a ritual, and a journey. The album emerges as a triptych of sound, a delicate yet chaotic interplay of energy and meticulous artistry. From hypnotic drones to frenetic bursts of free jazz, ZAÄAR’s approach defies definition, yet invites complete immersion.

Formed as the twin project to NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM, ZAÄAR channels a similarly unbound ethos while carving their unique path. The band features a powerhouse lineup: Guillaume Cazalet (vocals, flute, zurna), Jean-Jacques Duerinckx (saxophones), Sébastien Schmit (drums, percussion), Hugues-Philippe Desrosiers (bass), and Didier Nietzsche (electronics). Together, they conjure soundscapes that teeter between the earthly and the ethereal—a symphony of contrasts that feels both primal and futuristic.
