‘Staring at the Sky (alternate version)’ by Strange Pilgrim | New EP, ‘Embers’

On their new ‘Embers’ EP, Strange Pilgrim takes a step back into familiar territory, but with a fresh spin.

Reimagining five tracks from their self-titled debut, the EP injects new energy into old favorites. Four of the songs—’Staring at the Sky,’ ‘More Than I Did,’ ‘Salt and Seagulls,’ and ‘Blue Light’—have been reworked around the lo-fi rhythm of a Korg SR 120 Minipops drum machine, alongside the warm, melodic hum of an OM84 Omnichord. This creates a lush space where synths, bass, and melody steal the spotlight, casting a dreamy, nostalgic glow. Meanwhile, the title track ‘Embers’ takes on a new form entirely—reworked into a remix that strips down the original to its intimate core.

Balancing introspection with that raw, creative spark, the alternate versions were recorded in a laid-back, collaborative home studio setup with Josh Barnhart pulling the strings. Pat Spurgeon (drums, piano, autoharp) and Elliott Kay (bass) lent their talents, while David Glasebrook mixed and mastered the EP at The Garden Shed. The cover art is an original piece by Samuel Farrell, bringing a visual echo to the sound.

Following the buzz around their vinyl debut, ‘Embers’ is a chance to hear these tracks through a new lens—finding beauty in their simplicity and a touch of strange. Royal Oakie Records will drop the EP worldwide on March 28th, with CD, cassette, and digital versions all on offer.

Today, we’re giving you a sneak peek from the upcoming EP.

“Staring at the Sky” is playful and unrestrained, with this reimagined version diving deeper into its psychedelic roots. The steady pulse of the drum machine blends seamlessly with synth-driven melodies, crafting a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere that pulls you in.
