‘Golden Dragon’ by Black Honey Cult | A New Sonic Ritual from Lords of Altamont’s Jake Cavaliere
A new sonic ritual from Lords of Altamont’s Jake Cavaliere.
Even the name itself drips with mystery—Black Honey Cult sounds like an incantation, a secret society, a call to arms for those attuned to the darker frequencies of rock ‘n’ roll. Steeped in the Los Angeles underground, the band’s debut self-titled album is set to arrive on May 2nd (Heavy Psych Sounds), a heady swirl of psychedelic grit, nocturnal post-punk, and hypnotic grooves. Today, we unveil their latest invocation: ‘Golden Dragon.’
Black Honey Cult is a new sonic ritual from Lords of Altamont’s Jake Cavaliere, conjured from decades of prowling the fringes of rock’s rawest edges. It all begins in the early ’90s, where Johnny DeVilla and Cavaliere first crossed paths in the legendary echo chamber of JabberJaw, a venue where distortion and rebellion reigned. By 2003, their creative orbit expanded when Spencer Robinson joined The Lords of Altamont, solidifying a bond that has crackled through years of collaborations and sonic experiments.
The idea of Black Honey Cult has flickered since 2010, a slow-burning vision that only recently crystallized into its current, formidable lineup. With Garey Snider pounding the skins and Travis Petersen completing the soundscape on guitar, the band has fully realized its alchemical fusion of garage rock menace and cinematic psychedelia.
‘Golden Dragon’ is a trip through dimly lit alleyways and neon-drenched dreamscapes, a feverish transmission from the edges of consciousness. Its DNA carries traces of The 13th Floor Elevators, Suicide, and The Velvet Underground, but warped through a krautrock pulse and a gothic undercurrent that lingers like the last hit of something illicit.
Bringing this spectral vision to life is Paul Roessler (Screamers, 45 Grave), whose production at Kitten Robot Studios amplifies the band’s brooding atmosphere with a clarity that feels both immediate and timeless. The result is music that isn’t content to simply be heard…it wants to consume, envelop, and pull you into its orbit.
