‘Himlakroppars stämsång’ by Urtidsdjur | New Album, ‘Fågelsånger’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Himlakroppars stämsång’ by the always cosmic Urtidsdjur, taken from their upcoming album ‘Fågelsånger,’ slated for release later this year on limited vinyl.
A few years back, we fell in love with Urtidsdjur and their beautiful sound on their debut, so you can imagine how excited I am about their upcoming album. The band is sharing this little preview of what’s to come, and so far, it seems they’re getting a bit heavier… I’m really curious to hear how the rest of it will sound. This single, ‘Himlakroppars stämsång’ (which loosely translates to “Celestial Bodies Singing in Perfect Harmony”—no pressure, right?), is their latest mind-expanding transmission from Sweden’s psych-prog explorers.
The video itself fits the vibe with that VHS warmth, or whatever you want to call it. Urtidsdjur was formed back in 2020 and consists of Emil Niklasson, Gustaf Boström, Kettil Engberg, and Affe Kihlberg, with influences ranging from Swedish underground prog bands to Sabbath and even Neil Young.
As mentioned, ‘Fågelsånger’ will be out later this year on vinyl, and I can’t wait to spin it. For some reason, this band just gives off such a nice vibe… a proper 70s feel.
The album took shape between 2023 and 2024, with recording sessions split between the band’s own rehearsal space and a studio in Gottsunda. Mattias Jansson oversaw the mixing at Bjursås Biograf, while Jakob Grundtman handled the mastering. To expand their sound, the band enlisted an impressive lineup of guest musicians. Gustaf Holmberg contributed the ethereal tones of the nyckelharpa, Niklas Widén added layers of pedal steel, Åsa Helleberg’s Moog synth textures, and Julian Eduardo Lozano Galindez’s Mellotron arrangements further enhanced their sound. During the mixing process, Urtidsdjur also recorded a live session in their rehearsal space, featuring two new tracks from ‘Fågelsånger’ alongside three reworked pieces from their 2020 debut.
