Jetstream Pony Unveils ‘Bowerbirds and Blue Things’

Jetstream Pony’s new album ‘Bowerbirds and Blue Things’ is out now, and it marks a bold step forward for the band, whose blend of post-punk, power-pop, and new-wave has been captivating listeners since their 2017 debut.

With roots in Brighton and Croydon, the band, led by Beth Arzy (The Luxembourg Signal, Trembling Blue Stars, Aberdeen) and Shaun Charman (The Wedding Present, The Popguns, The Fireworks), have carved out their own unique sound that has evolved across several releases, including their 2020 self-titled debut album and the follow-up mini-album ‘Misplaced Words.’

‘Bowerbirds and Blue Things’ is a reflection of the band’s ever-growing depth and experimental approach. The new record pushes their sound into unexplored territory.

The tracklist kicks off with ‘Sit and Wonder,’ a lockdown-era creation that echoes the melancholic tone of the band’s early material. It’s the kind of song that wraps you in its introspection, its downbeat vibe providing an eerie counterpoint to the more upbeat moments of the album. From there, the album rolls through energetic tracks like ‘Bubblegum Nothingness,’ a nod to their power-pop roots with a cheeky twist, and ‘The Relativity of Wrong,’ where the bass takes center stage, driven by a hypnotic, layered rhythm that recalls the post-punk greatness of Gang of Four.

One of the standout moments is the eerie ‘Tendrils,’ a track sung by bassist Kerry Boettcher. It leans into a darker, more atmospheric sound, influenced by Sonic Youth’s abrasive yet melodic approach. Kerry’s voice, along with the ghostly backing vocals, sets the mood, making this one of the album’s most haunting tracks.

‘Bonanza 2 Tango Sierra’ and ‘Look Alive!’ are propulsive and infectious, the kind of songs that will make you want to move, while “3am” brings a quieter, more brooding energy, incorporating elements of early New Order and The Chills into the mix. Each track feels like a chapter in a larger, unfolding narrative that’s as diverse as it is captivating.

‘Bowerbirds and Blue Things’ is a true evolution for Jetstream Pony. With a stellar lineup that also includes new guitarist Mark Matthews (The Dentists, The Treasures of Mexico), the record solidifies Jetstream Pony as a band who continues to refine their sound without compromising the DIY spirit that made them a favorite in indie circles.

Catch Jetstream Pony live this spring and summer at their upcoming shows, including performances at Rough Trade East, the Shiiine On Festival, and a much-anticipated set at Berlin’s Loge. Keep an eye out for Bowerbirds and Blue Things – it’s sure to be one of the standout albums of 2025.
