Kewpie Dolls – ‘Bad Boy Mine’ b/w ‘Private Party’ (2024)
All-girl four-piece the Kewpie Dolls make a righteous din across the two tracks of their Ugly Pop label single.
The topside is the scorching ‘Bad Boy Mine,’ an original number that easily keeps pace with a legacy that includes the Suzi Quatro-led Pleasure Seekers of Detroit from the mid-sixties, through the likes of the Runaways, the Pandoras, and other, more modern California groups such as Mummy Longlegs and the Dead Barbies, and onto Scotland’s Sally Skull, Pink Kross, and Thee Girl Fridays.
The Kewpie Dolls come from Canada, and their chosen style is teenage garage rock’n’roll. On the evidence of ‘Bad Boy Mine’ and the flipside, the David Axelrod and H.B. Barnum co-write ‘Private Party,’ I can tell you they’re more than up for it. They lock in the grooves with a seething bedrock of thumping drums, scorching guitar, and plenty of cool, fun-inspired vocal whoops and screams. Why don’t you do yourself a favour and grab a listen to this limited-edition seven-inch 45? You’re unlikely to be disappointed by the sounds you hear.
