Marlene Ribeiro Reinvents Sons of Viljems’ ‘Morning Horn’ in a Hypnotic New Remix
‘Morning Horn’ by Sons of Viljems is out now via Disasters By Choice, weaving its hypnotic spell into the world.
Some collaborations happen naturally, like they were waiting in the air. Last spring, Marlene Ribeiro and Sons of Viljems (joined by sitarist Shama Rahman) shared a stage at SJQ in London, and something clicked. Fast-forward to now, and we get to witness the fruits of that encounter—a reimagining of ‘Morning Horn’ that’s as skeletal as it is hypnotic.
Ribeiro deconstructs the track down to its essence, stripping it bare and rebuilding it in a relentless swirl of percussion and vocal loops. Elisa Ridolfi’s vocals are pushed front and center, weaving through the percussive layers like a trance-inducing mantra. It’s a transformation that manages to stay true to the original while planting deep roots in Ribeiro’s own sonic terrain. And to complete the experience, live Sons of Viljems percussionist Moormur provides an accompanying visual piece, further immersing the listener in the remix’s altered dreamscape.
Sons of Viljems’ debut album, ‘Lithospheric Melodies,’ from which the original ‘Morning Horn’ stems, is a deep dive into shadowy, experimental terrain. The London-based duo—Andrea Giommi (guitar, vocals) and Nejc Haberman (bass, synth)—spent five years meticulously crafting this 42-minute opus. Dub basslines meet jazz textures and spectral melodies, all coalescing into a heady, cinematic atmosphere. The record pulls in an array of collaborators, including drummer Tim Doyle (Chiminyo), synth artist Filip Sijanec, and vocalists Laura Loriga and Elisa Ridolfi, each adding their own spectral touch to the album’s eerie soundscapes.
Now, with Ribeiro’s reworking of ‘Morning Horn,’ the album’s sonic world expands yet again—another step in its evolution, another perspective on its haunting beauty.
