Michele Ducci’s ‘Why Do I Wake Up Every Morning?’ Is a Dreamy Swing-Pop Journey Into…
‘Why Do I Wake Up Every Morning?’ marks the first chapter in ‘Film for Songs: The Great Book of Nature,’ an animated short film from Michele Ducci and Letizia Mandolesi, out now via Monotreme Records.
The film, which pairs two brand-new tracks – ‘Why Do I Wake Up Every Morning?’ and ‘Why You?’ – follows an animated book that’s trying to tell its own story, but with a twist. It’s a book within a book, like a weird, mind-bending Russian doll of storytelling.
Packed with nods to Georges Méliès’ The Vanishing Lady, Giordano Bruno’s cosmic musings, and philosophical legends Ernst Bloch and Rocco Ronchi, the first track brings you into the surreal world of a sleep-deprived traveler encountering the magical book. It’s as much about time and its strange presence as it is about sleepless nights and existential loops.
Ducci explains, “The song talks about the enigma of time lived as a living presence in that dizzying moment when we can’t fall asleep. In the end we fall asleep and wake up and that enigma, of falling and rising, like living choruses, is maybe who we are as living beings.”
Musically, ‘Why Do I Wake Up Every Morning?’ is a sweet, infectious swing-pop jam, with whistling, dreamy boy/girl vocals, and Ducci’s voice floating through it all like a soft lullaby.
The second track and full video drop in June, so stay tuned.
And if you’re in London, Ducci’s making a long-overdue live return on April 9th, supporting Is Tropical at New River Studios. Don’t miss it!
